DOWN PAYMENT EXEMPTION CONCESSION
INFO TO NOTE: The down payment exemption concessions for the 2024 academic year (2024AY) are now open. The criteria for this concession are as follows:

Family/household income less than R600 000 per year

South African citizen
-
Admitted as full-time student for either a first undergraduate qualification or a first postgraduate qualification
-
Be defined as academically deserving
-
Students doing a second postgraduate qualification, which is a vertical movement e.g. honours to masters, is allowed.
If you comply with the above, the outstanding balance criteria is as follows:

Outstanding debt for 30 September 2023 – registration clearance with no acknowledgment of debt (AOD) issued

Outstanding debt for 20 June 2023 and 30 September 2023 only - AOD to be issued

Outstanding debt for 30 April 2023 and previous year’s debt – to be settled upfront. AOD only available after 30 April 2023 and previous years’ debt has been settled.
Down payment exemption concession is not funding, it is a relief mechanism to ensure access to academic and on-campus registration for academically deserving students. This relief does not cover allowances, off-campus accommodation etc. Moreover, this relief does not constitute a reduction in debt of the student.
Non-compliance:

Uploading fictitious documents

Misrepresentation of household income

Dishonouring the acknowledgement of debt (AOD) payment terms
EXCLUSIONS:

MBChB 1 (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery – first year)

Part-time studies
Should you be rejected for concessions, you may apply for concession appeals using the process below.

Student must have applied for concession

Be academically deserving
-
Have roll-over debt and 2023 debt (30 April 2023)
-
Not a horizontal move, i.e., (same NQF level)
-
Not admitted for part-time or occasional studies
-
Not be handed over to debt collectors
Lastly, an AOD will only be issued to students whose concession application was approved.
